Sally McMullen, a licensed practical nurse at Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan, Colorado, received Life Care Centers of America’s Mountain States Division Whatever It Takes And Then Some Award on Aug. 26, 2015, for her dedication to customer service.
Executives from Life Care awarded McMullen a $1,000 cash prize during an awards ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. She was chosen from among hundreds of associates in the Mountain States Division and was one of only eight associates from Life Care’s more than 200 facilities nationwide to receive the award.
McMullen is a member of the facility’s Fun Committee and puts in extra effort to make working at Valley View Villa an enjoyable experience for her fellow associates. She often brings in snacks for her co-workers and has organized baskets for silent auction to raise money for charities.
Even more than that, however, is the impact McMullen has on residents.
“For many residents, she is the family they do not have,” said Brittany Staley, executive director. “She will attend funerals of our loved ones that pass away, or she will come in at night and sit with residents when they aren’t doing well.”
Since so many residents are Denver Broncos fans, McMullen makes game days social occasions at the facility instead of having residents just sit in their rooms and watch the event on TV. She organizes Broncos parties with snacks for residents to munch on while they share their enthusiasm for the team.
McMullen has even been seen around town taking residents on community outings.
"Sally would never boast about how valuable she is here at Valley View Villa,” said Staley. “You have to catch her doing something above and beyond, or you would never know.”
McMullen simply shared, “I love the residents. They are my life.”
Life Care Centers of America’s Whatever It Takes And Then Some program rewards associates for extraordinary acts of kindness. Monthly awards are presented in Life Care facilities nationwide based on nominations from fellow associates, family members, residents and guests. Each facility then chooses an annual winner, from which the divisional winners are selected.
“Dedicated caregivers routinely go far above and beyond their job descriptions, and Sally McMullen certainly demonstrates by her example their professionalism and compassion for the residents they serve,” said Beecher Hunter, Life Care president. “We are proud of Sally and the thousands she represents in their selfless approach to the needs of others."
