In August 2017, Brittany Staley, executive director at Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan, Colorado, bought school supplies for her child and was surprised at how expensive supplies were.
Staley and Jana Underwood, director of nursing, discussed what they could do to help associates who might be struggling to buy school supplies for their own children. They purchased a variety of items to make available to associates – backpacks, paper, markers, crayons, notebooks and other materials. The marketing department even gave a few Valley View Villa lunchboxes.
For two days the week before school started, associates could come and take supplies.
"We filled a table in the conference room and put out a notice of hours they could come shop,” said Gayle Steffen, admissions director. “Approximately 20 families benefitted, and some of the employees even brought their grandchildren in to get supplies.”
A few certified nursing assistants who were starting college were also able to find needed items.
One associate shared, “It was such a help. I didn’t have to spend an arm and a leg before school started.”
